Donna Dexter Obituary

Donna L. Dexter, 76, of Oakmont, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2022, in her residence. She was born Feb. 2, 1946, in Pittsburgh, to the late James P. and Elizabeth A. (Winkleman) Eaton. She was married to the late George Lewis "Lew" Dexter, who died in 2018. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Yosinski. Donna Dexter was well-known in the community as a loving, caring mother who was active in the Oakmont Garden Club, volunteered at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, and helped with the annual June Car Show at Riverside Park for the Pittsburgh Antique Car Club and other events. She was always available to help and guide people with her compassion and wisdom. She was a lover of animals and usually had two dogs and several cats throughout her life. As long as she could remember, Donna always wanted to be a nurse, and she first graduated from West Penn School of Nursing in 1967. She then completed her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing education at Pennsylvania State University. After working as a med-surg nurse, Donna accepted a teaching position at Citizen School of Nursing, where she spent the next 44 years. During that time, she served as an instructor and assistant director of the nursing school. She mentored thousands of prospective nurses, both with their nursing studies, but also helped them navigate their life challenges. Donna continued her own education and became a certified nurse practitioner In 1998. Over the years, Donna received numerous awards, including the Cameo of Caring Award in 2010 for excellence in teaching. Donna loved life and will be missed by her family, friends and former students. She is survived by two sons, Douglas R. Dexter, of North Carolina, and Tim (Rose Romano) Dexter, of Oakmont; a daughter, Jennifer (Frank) Lombardo, of Oakmont; four grandchildren, Dexter Lopez, Logan Dexter, Jocelyn Dexter and Liam Dexter; also survived by two brothers, James E.
