Kenneth Lee Johnson, 87, of New Kensington, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at UPMC Passavant Hospital. His gregarious nature and smile will never be forgotten. Ken was born July 21, 1934, in New Kensington, a son of the late George and Violet Johnson. A graduate of "Ken High," he served in the Army and was stationed in Berlin, Germany during 1958-59. Upon his discharge from the Army, he proposed to his girlfriend, Marie, and they spent a wonderful 62 years together. She was the love of his life. Ken was employed at the State Regional Correctional Facility in Greensburg for 26 years, in which he supervised the meals in the kitchen and cafeteria. He enjoyed his 26 years of retirement working on his house and garden, volunteering for Meals on Wheels and frying fish for Mt. St. Peter's Church during Lent. Ken was an avid bowler. He captained his church league teams, played on a travel team and enjoyed a couple's league with his wife. He was a member of the VFW Post 92, in which he helped run bingo. Ken enjoyed watching game shows, building puzzles and hosting a monthly poker club. A day didn't go by that he didn't have a deck of cards in his hands. He was a Pittsburgh Pirates fan since 1948, a Steelers season ticket holder for 30 years and an enthusiastic Penguins fan like his sons. When he wasn't watching the pros, he was watching his grandchildren play tennis, baseball and softball. Ken was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Johnson. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marie Joan (Bellavia) Johnson; two sons, Kenn (Julie O'Hara) Johnson, of Aspinwall, and Mark (Marcie) Johnson, of New Kensington; brother, Lee (Linda) Johnson, of Lower Burrell; four grandchildren, Ashely, Adam, Aimee and Aiden Johnson; along with two nephews and six nieces.
